OUR HISTORY

A family tradition of fine woodworking since 1907.

The Ciuffo family’s legacy in woodworking began in Palermo, Italy with Gaspare Ciuffo, born in 1878. A master sculptor and artisan, Gaspare married Petrina DeStefano and together they had four children – Salvatore, Nancy, Alfonso, and Filomena, before immigrating to New York City in 1912. In Manhattan, Gaspare founded Ciuffo Furniture, a workshop known for its ecclesiastical wood sculptures and custom hand-carved furniture. Gaspare’s exceptional craftsmanship lives on in works still visible throughout New York City today, including Virgin and Child with St. Joseph at Manhattan City College and the 14 Stations of the Cross at the shrine to St. Eloise on Mulberry Street. Gaspare and Petrina welcomed their fifth child and third son, Angelo Ciuffo, in 1922. Gaspare went on to own and operate Ciuffo and Ciuffo Furniture in the 1930s with his son Alfonso.  He remained in New York City, devoted to his craft, until his passing in 1943.

Salvatore Ciuffo, the eldest son of Gaspare, apprenticed under his father before founding his own business specializing in custom furniture and upholstery with ornate carvings. His son, Gaspare “Gabby” Ciuffo, would later become a pivotal figure in the family’s evolution, founding Ciuffo Cabinetry and laying the groundwork for the company’s modern identity.

Alfonso Ciuffo, Gaspare’s second son, was born in 1909. He was educated in the New York City school system and trained at the Schools of Arts. Early in his career, he worked for W.J. Sloan & Company, carving intricate furniture pieces – including gifts commissioned for President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Alfonso operated Ciuffo and Ciuffo Furniture with his father Gaspare until 1934. Relocating to Oneida in 1934, Alfonso worked as a master woodcarver during World War II before opening Ciuffo Studio. Though initially short-lived, the studio would later be revived by his son, Lawrence.

Angelo Ciuffo, the youngest of Gaspare’s sons, was born in New York in 1922. Angelo trained extensively in woodworking, beginning carving at the age of 15 in his father Gaspare’s Manhattan shop. Angelo pursed woodworking his entire life, passing on his wealth of knowledge and experience to his great-nephews, Gary and Michael Ciuffo.

Gaspare “Gabby” Ciuffo, son of Salvatore Ciuffo, founded Ciuffo Cabinetry in New York. He trained his sons, Gary and Michael, from a young age, instilling in them the discipline and artistry of their craft. Gabby remained active in the business until his passing in 2003, leaving behind a thriving company built on craftsmanship and family.

Lawrence “Larry” Ciuffo, son of Alfonso Ciuffo, was born in 1941. A third-generation artisan, Larry grew up immersed in the family trade. In 1986, after years of training under both his father and grandfather, he launched L. Ciuffo Studios in California. Today, his restoration and refinishing work is sought after across the state, from San Francisco to Beverly Hills.

Gary Ciuffo began working alongside his father Gabby at just twelve years old and was fully immersed in the business by the time he graduated high school. Today, under his leadership, the company honors its heritage while embracing the future through technological innovation. With a lifetime devoted to upholding the family’s values of artistry, integrity, and meticulous craftsmanship, Gary continues to shape the company’s legacy. As a Certified Kitchen Designer and influential design contributor, he ensures Ciuffo Cabinetry remains synonymous with timeless, bespoke millwork of the highest caliber.

Michael Ciuffo, Vice President of Ciuffo Cabinetry, has dedicated his career to the family business. Trained under his father Gabby, he has been instrumental in developing CNC technology and modern production standards, ensuring the company continues to produce millwork of the highest caliber.

Joe Ciuffo, Gary’s son, represents the fifth generation of Ciuffo artisans. Joe earned dual degrees in Economics and Business Administration from SUNY Oswego and initially worked as a Trust and Estate Consultant. However, the draw of the family business was undeniable. He joined Ciuffo Cabinetry, combining his modern business acumen with the centuries-old craftsmanship passed down to him since childhood. Joe oversees all aspects of the business – from design and construction to installation and project management – and was recognized in 2018 by the National Kitchen and Bath Association as a “Thirty Under 30” professional for his leadership and contributions to the industry.
